Hilltop Orchids, Inc. was established in 1991, in a small 24 x 60 ft. greenhouse offering only retail sales. Today the facility has grown to almost an acre of growing space. Hilltop now offers wholesale & retail sales of plants, seedlings, community pots, & flasks, many of which are produced in our large laboratory facility.
At Hilltop the emphasis is on Phalaenopsis development and breeding. You will find unique Phals that are not available elsewhere. There is also a wide variety of other orchid genera, such as, Paphiopedliums, Phragmipediums, Cattleyas, and Oncidiums, just to name a few. Orchid growing supplies are also available including our custom potting soil, and the fertilizer developed at Michigan State University.

Hilltop History
Hilltop Orchids is the result of the lifelong dream of a hobby grower.
Dick & Sandy Wells are the owners of Hilltop Orchids. Dick has been growing orchids since 1954. He was in High School when he was first struck by the ‘Orchid Disease.’ Sandy, on the other hand, inherited the disease, when she married Dick 41 years ago. To say the least, the business has grown far beyond any of their expectations.
The original plan was to operate a small business to support the orchid habit. Dick began with a 24 x 60 ft greenhouse, & somehow he must have given it too much fertilizer, because it grew and grew. It’s now 96 x 100 ft. In 1997 it became a full-time business and both have retired from their ‘real ‘ jobs.
Hilltop specializes in unique Phalaenopsis breeding. In addition there are also large collections of Paphiopedliums, Phragmipediums, Cattleyas, Oncidiums, Brassias, & various other genera that are easy to grow in the home. Breeding & flasking is done on site in orchid laboratory and grow many of our plants from seed.
We also offer support and assistance to the hobby grower by providing orchid supplies, written instructions, answering e-mail questions as quickly as possible, and offering hands-on workshops for potting, dividing, and general care of your plants. We are here for you!!
